JOHN TINDEL. The painting of Leadbelly by him that I have is my favorite.
My favorite artist in atlanta right now has to be Michi or Fahamu by far. Both of them approach subject matter in a almost comic way but with pretty heavy undertones. Its one thing to make a pretty picture but its another to make someone think.
